McQueen

  ALEXANDER McQUEEN

a beautiful mind...

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN WAS BORN IN LONDON ON MARCH 17TH 1969, THE YOUNGEST OF SIX CHILDREN. HE LEFT SCHOOL AT THE AGE OF 16 AND WAS OFFERED AN APPRENTICESHIP AT THE TRADITIONAL SAVILE ROW TAILORS ANDERSON AND SHEPHARD AND THEN AT NEIGHBORING GIEVES AND HAWKES, BOTH MASTERS IN THE TECHNICAL CONSTRUCTION OF CLOTHING. From there he moved to the theatrical costumiers Angels and Bermans where he mastered 6 methods of pattern cutting from the melodramatic 16th Century to the razor sharp tailoring which has become a McQueen signature. Aged 20 he was employed by the designer Koji Tatsuno, who also had his roots in British tailoring. A year later McQueen traveled to Milan where he was employed as Romeo Gigli’s design assistant. On his return to London, he completed a Masters degree in Fashion Design at Central Saint Martin’s. He showed his MA collection in 1992, which was famously bought in its entirety by Isabella Blow.
Alexander McQueen shows are known for their emotional power and raw energy, as well as the romantic but determinedly contemporary nature of the collections. Integral to the McQueen culture is the juxtaposition between contrasting elements: fragility and strength, tradition and modernity, fluidity and severity. An openly emotional and even passionate viewpoint is realized with a profound respect and influence for the arts and crafts tradition. Alexander’s collections combine an in-depth working knowledge of bespoke British tailoring, the fine workmanship of the French Haute Couture atelier and the impeccable finish of Italian manufacturing.
In less than 10 years McQueen became one of the most respected fashion designers in the world. In October 1996 he was appointed Chief Designer at the French Haute Couture House Givenchy where he worked until March of 2001. In December 2000, 51% of Alexander McQueen was acquired by the Gucci Group, where he remained Creative Director. Collections include women's ready-to-wear, men's ready-to-wear, accessories, eye wear and fragrance (Kingdom 2003 and MyQueen 2005). Expansion followed and included the opening of flagship stores in New York, London, Milan, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
The following awards have recognized Alexander McQueen’s achievement in fashion: British Designer of the year 1996, 1997, 2001, and 2003, International Designer of the Year by The Council of Fashion Designer’s of America (CFDA) in 2003, A Most Excellent Commander of The British Empire (CBE) by her Majesty the Queen in 2003, GQ Menswear Designer of the Year in 2007. His mother died on Feb. 2, 2010. Nine days later, Feb. 11, 2010 McQueen himself was found dead in his London home. His death was ruled a suicide and his ashes were spread on the Isle of Skye. Following his death, his longtime assistant, Sarah Burton was appointed creative director and head designer at McQueen. The fashion world still mourns the loss of such an amazingly talented young man.

YSL

YVES St. LAURENT

Need we say more? Probably not...but we will. Laurent was born in 1936 and raised in a villa near the Mediterranean with two younger sisters. He moved to Paris at 18 where his designs were quickly noticed. He was soon introduced to Christian Dior and a moment in fashion history was made. When Dior Died in 1958, Laurent was named head designer...he was 21 years old. He would go on to become the first couturier to design a full Ready to Wear line. He is regarded as one of the greatest designers in fashion history as well as being responsible for reviving couture following WWII. Yves St. Laurent died in 2008, but his design legacy will live on forever.

Jason Wu

JASON WU

Jason Wu has been named artistic director of Hugo Boss women's wear, including ready-to-wear and accessories. Boss has traditionally been known for its sleek suits for men, but the brand desires to expand its reach. Wu will continue to work on his own label, which he founded in 2007, but plans to develop a "strong, feminine women's wear collection that reciprocates the brand's authority in menswear." He adds that he has "long been a fan of Hugo Boss's vast tradition and lineage in extraordinary tailoring." The brand is equally excited to have the 30-year-old designer on board to help them strengthen the female side of its brand.

ROW

THE ROW

We LOVE those Olsen ladies. They have worked hard their entire lives and the proof of their talent shines beautifully throughout their latest collection. THE ROW was established in 2006 by Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen. Since its launch, the brand has expanded to include a range of ready-to-wear, eye wear, and handbags. THE ROW reflects a sense of relaxed and timeless elegance, focusing on fine fabrics and the perfect fit. In 2012, The Council of Fashion Designers of America named Ashley and Mary-Kate as Women's wear Designers of The Year. Part of THE ROW’s mission is to support high-end fashion manufacturing in the US. This is a fairly conservative and classic label compared to the hippie-boho look that Mary-Kate Olsen has become known for. Ashley has always seemed a bit more polished, often opting for a crisp white button down blouse paired with black trousers or pencil skirts. The Row is a unique blend of the two that never misses a beat and has become a favorite of celebrities. The pieces are well made which is evident in their perfectly tailored look. Not too clingy and not too boxy. Lots of black, white and navy which works well for this particular collection. The Row has made its mark and is here to stay.

Elie Saab

ELIE SAAB

Born the eldest son of a wood merchant in a suburb of Beirut, Elie began his career in 1982 when he was only 18 years old. Elie Saab's style is a wonderful blend of eastern & western culture and he generally uses noble materials such as taffeta, organza, noble and satin paired with more fluid and light fabrics. This man obviously knows his way around the female form because nobody does a gown like Elie.

A lifelong vegetarian, Stella McCartney does not use any leather or fur in her designs. Her collections include women’s ready-to-wear, accessories, lingerie, eye wear, fragrance and kids.

Proenza Schouler

CFDA Winner 2013

PROENZA SCHOULER

Nearly the entire collection for Fall 2013 is in black, white and shades of gray...and it works!  Just the right amounts sewn perfectly throughout.  Dresses are modest with a very stylish edge.  Many of the looks could transfer from day to night quite easily by adding some accessories such as, a sparkly clutch, some nice silver jewelry and some kick-ass heels.  Red shoes, pink shoes or maybe some studded black Louboutin's!  Adding the unexpected pop of color would really change up these looks.
